Lithified Vessels: Porcelain Canyon Vase with Moss

$295.00

Sold out

The Lithified Vessels collection is just beginning to take shape. In this round of work I am exploring and celebrating how we manage to thrive in spite of our uncertain and at times precarious circumstances. The porcelain canyon wall is sculpted to look like it is gradually coming apart, cracking and crumbling...with a sweet little pop of plant life precariously perched within its structure.

Moss grows in unlikely locations, such as in the desert on rocks, thriving and coming to life when moisture appears.

This vase measures 8" tall, 5" in diameter at the base and 3.75" in diameter at the rim.

Although my intent is to make this vase look like it's falling apart, it's actually quite durable. Made with porcelain and fired to 2345 degrees fahrenheit, this clay is fully vitrified (I have personally tested it).

Gentle hand washing is recommended. Made with food safe glazes, so occasional dishwasher cleaning is fine.

Porcelain Canyon Bowl with Moss

$195.00

Sold out

In this bowl I am expressing the beauty of a landscape influenced by a particular mineral: calcium carbonate (which happens to be an ingredient in most ceramic glazes).

Calcium carbonate is found in limestone and when it is suspended in a body of water it can impart a gorgeous aqua color. I have been fortunate to see this in places such as Havasupai Falls or cenotes in Yucatan.

This bowl was wheel thrown with porcelain and then sculpted. The glazes are food safe and fired to cone ten. It is fully vitrified. Can be used as a bowl or as a plant pot (with no drainage hole).

It measures 3.5" tall and 4.75" in diameter at the rim.

Gentle hand washing is recommended but occasional dishwasher use is fine.

Porcelain Canyon Mug with Moss. 16 ounces.

$175.00

Sold out

This is a porcelain version of the stoneware canyon mug, a bit less realistic but with the same theme. This version reminds me of white limestone. I sculpted a cracking and fragmented facade with loose rocks punctuated with pockets of moss.

Made with porcelain and high fired to 2345 degrees fahrenheit (cone ten). The interior is glazed in aqua blue. The exterior is lightly glazed and accented with aqua blue and green glazes.

Hand washing recommended although occasional dishwasher cleaning is fine. Microwave safe.

Porcelain Fossil Mug with Quartz. 15 ounces.

$225.00

Sold out

I included a fossil in this imagined limestone canyon, rich with calcium carbonate (which happens to be a very common ingredient in ceramic glazes, in the earth's crust, and in fossils).

At sometime in the future, modern humans will occupy a small sliver of the geologic record of life forms that once inhabited this amazing planet. I find this knowledge humbling and makes me feel grateful for existing at all.

Made with porcelain and high fired to 2345 degrees fahrenheit (cone ten). The interior is glazed with a glossy aqua blue. The exterior is lightly glazed and accented with aqua blue. Small quartz crystals are embedded in pockets of the canyon wall.

Gentle hand washing recommended. Food safe.

Stoneware Canyon Mug with Lichen Wash. 14 ounces.

$130.00

Sold out

I was focused primarily on mimicking the structure and surface of a desert canyon wall with this mug, trying to capture its solidity and fragility. I sculpted a cracking and fragmented facade with loose rocks that look a bit precarious in spots and added a bit of color to the surface to simulate lichen.

Made with stoneware clay and high fired to 2345 degrees fahrenheit (cone ten). The interior is glazed in aqua blue. The exterior is lightly glazed and accented with a variety of glazes.

Hand washing recommended although occasional dishwasher cleaning is fine. Microwave safe.

Stoneware Canyon Mug with Saguaro. 14 ounces.

$175.00

Sold out

I was focused primarily on mimicking the structure and surface of a canyon wall with this mug, trying to capture its solidity and fragility. I sculpted a cracking and fragmented facade with loose rocks, punctuated with saguaro precariously perched in tiny pockets of soil. This is specifically inspired by canyon wall saguaros in Aravaipa Canyon, AZ.

Made with stoneware clay and high fired to 2345 degrees fahrenheit (cone ten). The interior is glazed in aqua blue. The exterior is lightly glazed.

Hand washing recommended although occasional dishwasher cleaning is fine. Microwave safe.

Stoneware Canyon with Hoodoos.

$180.00

Sold out

For this vessel I am exploring how to convey the character of my local Santa Catalina Mountains, particularly the section of Mt. Lemmon with rock formations called 'hoodoos'. I love how precarious these formations look, as though they are boulders stacked on top of one another.

The exterior is sculpted to mimic a canyon wall, the stone bridge and hoodoo on top of the vessel are intended to resemble precarious geological formations.

I imagine this being used as a small vase, a little basket or a sculpture...but its use is up to you.

High fired to cone ten. Wheel thrown with a stoneware clay. The interior has a dark turquoise glaze, the exterior is washed with a variety of clay slips.

Hand washing recommended but dishwasher cleaning is fine on occasion.

Stoneware Canyon Mug with Golden Cacti. 12 ounces.

$195.00

Sold out

With this mug I was focused primarily on mimicking the structure and surface of a canyon wall. I sculpted a cracking and fragmented facade with loose rocks around the handle, punctuated with cacti.

Made with stoneware clay and fired to 2345 degrees fahrenheit (cone ten), the interior is glazed in white. Gold luster (real gold) was applied to the cacti and then again fired to 1300+ degrees.

Hand washing recommended due to the gold luster. Food safe.
