My overall intent is to make ceramics that speak to your love for Nature.
Landscapes are often woven into our memories and sense of self. As children we were drawn to get our hands dirty, to throw off our shoes (and pants) and jump into a stream, to stop mid-play and carefully observe an insect, to run out into the desert or woods and explore, collecting special rocks/seeds/leaves along the way to keep as souvenirs. By diving into our natural surroundings we learned so much about ourselves and our place in nature. We belong there. Many of us remember and want to return as often as possible. I make pottery that serves as a personal memento for experiences in nature that have made an impression on me. Perhaps a bud vase made to resemble a rock or a mug adorned with a miniature insect/landscape can serve as a tiny reminder, while you sip your morning coffee, to make time to head outdoors. |
My ceramic work is always evolving and features rotating themes that stem from my love of earth materials, favorite landscapes, artistic influences from my Mexican heritage, plants, insects and geology. I have developed a wide range of series or collections that capture this diversity of interests and influences. Working on a variety of designs keeps me passionate and eager to go to work each day. I love learning new techniques and challenging myself.
Each batch of ceramic work offered during shop updates will contain a mix of past designs that continue to be developed, as well as new takes on familiar themes.

This one woman ceramic studio is focused on a sustainable, intentional, measured pace of production. This pace aligns with the time-consuming, high touch nature of these pieces. My work is high fired to cone 10, using mostly glazes formulated in the studio.
Small batches of work are offered periodically online during shop updates. |
Please refer to the FAQ for more information about these restocks.

In addition to formulating my own glazes, I am currently learning how to develop my own clay recipes, as well as continuing to test local rocks and clays to see which have potential for use in my work.
I love the idea of making pieces completely from scratch.

I'm a Mexican-American potter and artist born in the Sonoran Desert city of Tucson, Arizona and raised on both sides of the US-Mexico border.
While studying at the University of Arizona, I earned a bachelors degree in fine arts with an emphasis in painting and illustration, and a masters degree in landscape architecture. I transitioned from my career as a landscape architect to pursue pottery once I became a mother. I felt compelled to try wheel throwing and asked my mom, a potter with decades of experience working with clay and teaching ceramics, to teach me the basics. Over time, I built a small, thriving online pottery business by the name of Seedling Clayworks. Seedling Clayworks was a space to freely and joyously experiment with many themes, materials and styles of work. |
Eight years after launching Seedling Clayworks, I have transitioned my business name to Samirah Steinmeyer Ceramics. I have straddled the line between fast-paced production and art making for years and am now ready to settle down for a bit on the side of slower-paced, functional art making.
All of the work offered here is carefully made by one pair of hands, and the name of this ceramics studio reflects this.
