Anthropocene Mug with Blooming Cacti. 16 ounces.
Inspired by geological time and finding fossils while out hiking in the desert, this mug imagines a canyon wall in a very, very distant future marking our current geological age. Mimicking the structure and surface of a canyon wall, capturing its solidity and fragility, it feels like a rock but smooth in the right spots.
I sculpted a cracking and fragmented facade with loose rocks, and blooming cacti precariously perched in tiny pockets of soil (or in this case on a fossilized skull). The handle was carved to offer a comfortable grip.
Made with porcelain clay and high fired to 2345 degrees fahrenheit (cone ten). The interior is glazed in white. The mostly raw clay exterior is punctuated with vibrant glazes.
Hand washing is recommended, although microwave use and occasional dishwasher cleaning is fine.
