Anthropocene Mug with Blooming Cacti 1. 16 ounces.
Inspired by geological time and finding fossils while out hiking in the desert, this mug imagines a canyon wall in a very, very distant future marking our current geological age. Made to resemble desert rocks, mimicking the structure and surface of a canyon wall, capturing its solidity and fragility. It feels like a rock but has been sanded so that it is also smooth in the right spots.
I sculpted a cracking and fragmented facade with loose rocks, and blooming cacti precariously perched in tiny pockets of soil (or in this case a fossilized skull). The handle was carved to offer a comfortable grip.
Made with stoneware clay and high fired to 2345 degrees fahrenheit (cone ten). The interior is glazed in a speckled warm grey with a green tone. The mostly raw clay exterior is punctuated with a vibrant glazes.
Hand washing is recommended, although occasional dishwasher cleaning is fine.
