This mug was made to resemble desert rocks, mimicking the structure and surface of a canyon wall, capturing its solidity and fragility. It feels like a rock but has been sanded so that it is also smooth in the right spots.
I sculpted a cracking and fragmented facade with loose rocks, and saguaro cacti precariously perched in tiny pockets of soil. The handle was carved to offer a comfortable grip.
Made with stoneware clay and high fired to 2345 degrees fahrenheit (cone ten). The interior is glazed in a speckled warm grey with a green tone. The exterior is punctuated with a vibrant turquoise glaze.
Hand washing is recommended, although occasional dishwasher cleaning is fine.
