My Lithified Vessels series has continued to evolve since the last update. The collection below has further explored and integrated more geological features: tinajas (natural pools carved into bedrock) and imagined Anthropocene fossils. Honing my skills in expressing a visual language of landscape continues to expand.
These pieces are small, functional sculptures. But unlike art in a museum or gallery, you're encouraged to touch and engage with these. They are high fired, fully vitrified and durable. Crafted for every day use.
The exterior texture on these pieces is applied randomly and allowed to develop fine cracks, which become cues for me to follow in sculpting fractures in the canyon walls. This feels like a collaboration with the clay in the moment. The cracks are only on the exterior surface and do not penetrate into the interior.
Below you will find videos for some of my listings, to better convey their sizes, colors and textures. Feel free to enlarge them to see details of each piece.

Anthropocene
Inspired by encounters with fossils while hiking in the desert. These pieces imagine a very distant future with canyon walls containing fossils from the Anthropocene age.

Lithified
Geologically inspired and self referential work. I'm coaxing my ceramic materials to resemble their true, rocky origins. These pieces explore the fragile, fractured and unpredictable nature of something so seemingly durable/solid. Also an ode to the vibrant life precariously perched and thriving in tiny pockets of soil in canyon walls.

memento mori
...means 'remember you must die'. A gentle, not morbid, reminder to take a moment to be present today. Maybe while you enjoy some tea or coffee.
